Why choose petGuard insurance?

Pet insurance that you can trust

What happens if your cat or dog hurts themselves or becomes unwell? No pet owner wants to think about it, but injuries or illness can strike at any time. Our cover helps you manage the cost of vet bills as well as additional related costs, including vet transportation, complementary treatments, emergency boarding and much more.

Protection for your pets with petGuard

Best friends deserve the best possible cover

Pet insurance can help protect you against the cost of expensive vet bills if your cat or dog needs treatment for an injury or illness. At petGuard, you can help protect the health and well-being of your cats and dogs with our wide-ranging covers that are included as standard, and at a price that suits your budget with our choice of vet fee limits.

  • Three levels of cover

    What can we offer you?

We offer three levels of annual vet fee cover - £3,000, £6,000 or £12,000. All of them come with the full range of cover benefits but at a price to suit a range of budgets. You can also choose to cover the cost of vet fees resulting from an accident (Accident only) or our more comprehensive Accident and illness cover.

  • It’s easy to claim

How do you claim on your pet insurance?

For the many thousands of cat and dog owners that we have helped over the last 37 years, we have always kept the claims process as easy and straight-forward as possible; which is why so many continue to insure with petGuard each year. Our commitment remains, so that you can focus on helping to care for your cat or dog when they need you most.

Our UK based claim team will help support you through the process and keep you updated regularly by text or phone. When it comes to paying the vet’s bill, we can either pay you, so that you're not left out of pocket, or pay directly to your vet.

  • Accident and Illness pet insurance

What does Accident and Illness insurance cover?

Accident and Illness pet insurance covers exactly what it says. If your cat or dog injures themselves, is involved in an accident or falls ill and requires treatment, then we can help cover costly vet fees. In addition, petGuard automatically provides you with the cover that is suitable for chronic or long-term conditions that your cat or dog might develop whilst insured with us as well as short term illness and injuries.

  • Multi-pet Discount

How much is your multi-pet discount?

We can offer up to 10% off your cover when you insure more than one pet with us! As long as all of your pets are on the same level of cover, then we can offer you a discount whether you’re adding multiple cats, dogs or both onto your policy.

Accident and Illness cover for cats, dogs, puppies and kittens

What does a petGuard policy cover you against?

With our Accident and Illness insurance, you can choose between three levels of vet fee cover, with up to £12,000 towards your annual vet bills. You can even get a 10% multi-pet discount when you insure your cats, dogs, kittens and puppies! Take a look at what’s included in our wide-ranging cover and what we can do to protect the ones you love.

  • Veterinary Fees

Worried about facing an expensive vet bill?

petGuard will help to cover the cost of veterinary treatment if your cat or dog falls ill or gets injured. We appreciate that the needs of cat and dog owners are as different as each individual pet, which is why we offer three levels of vet fee limits, but include the same wide-ranging levels of cover regardless of which limit you choose. We can also provide cover for up to 25% of complementary treatments prescribed by your vet. You cannot claim for vet fees within the first 14 days of starting your cover.

  • Cover for long-term and chronic conditions

Will my pet insurance cover long-term conditions?

Regardless of which vet fee limit you choose, you can claim up to that limit within the 12 months of your policy period. If your policy is then renewed, without any gaps in cover, your vet fee limit is ‘reset’ so that you can claim up to that limit again in the next 12 month policy period. This includes conditions that you have successfully claimed for with your previous years’ petGuard policy. So, chronic and long-term conditions can be covered for each year that your petGuard policy is continually renewed with us. We are unable to cover any pre-existing conditions known about, advised, or treated prior to your first policy with us.

  • Emergency boarding

Who will look after your pet if something happens to you?

If you can’t look after your pet after suffering an accident, then we can cover the cost of daily minding or boarding fees of up to £1,500 while you’re on the mend.

  • Holiday cancellation

Had to cut your holiday short because of a poorly pet?

If you’ve had to cancel or cut short your holiday because your pet has gone missing or is seriously ill, then we can provide up to £5,000 towards the cost of a cancelled trip. Exclusions apply to conditions and illnesses.

THE BENEFITS OF PETGUARD PET INSURANCE

  • Accidental Damage to Pet Accessories

Own a few pet accessories or gadgets?

We can cover those too! If your pet’s cage or tracking device gets damaged or stolen, we can provide up to £500 to repair or replace it. Accessories or pet-related equipment must be owned from new and security requirements apply.

  • Accidental Damage to Third-Party Property

What happens if your pet breaks something?

Pets can be clumsy, but we know that they don’t mean it. If your cat knocks over someone’s vase while you’re visiting or your dog has caused a spill, then we can cover up to £500 of accidental damage to third-party property. Damage to property owned by family or motor vehicles not included.

  • Reward costs

What can we do to help find your pet?

If your pet is missing, then we’ll do what we can to help. Our cover includes the cost of missing pet posters, local advertising costs and even a £250 reward. Your pet must have been missing for over 24 hours.

  • Theft or straying

What happens if your pet has gone missing?

If your pet has gone missing for more than 90 days due to straying or theft, we can pay you the original purchase price of your pet. Maximum amount is £1,500 and the claim must be submitted within 180 days.

  • Vet transportation

What if you need to see a different vet?

If your vet recommends that you visit another vet or specialist for a referral, we can provide up to £200 to cover your travel fees and overnight stays to make sure you get there.

  • Farewell cover

Does pet insurance cover farewell costs?

We can offer up to £200 to provide the send-off your pet deserves if they sadly pass away. Farewell cover includes cremation and burial costs. Cover does not include death from a pre-existing condition or from an illness that your pet was not vaccinated for.

  • Optional Dog Liability Insurance

What will Dog liability Insurance protect me against?

Dog Liability Insurance, or Third Party Liability cover, is designed to cover the potential costs of claims made against you following damage or injuries caused by your dog. If your dog damages property while out for a walk or injures a member of the public, then our optional dog liability cover can provide up to £2million to protect you from claims brought against you.

Assistance dogs must be trained in accordance with guidance from Assistance Dogs UK. Conditions apply and cover only applies in the UK. Excluded breeds are listed here. You can read more about our optional Dog Liability Insurance here.

  • Optional overseas pet travel

Am I covered to travel abroad with my pet?

With our optional Overseas Travel cover, you can get travel insurance for your pet so that you don’t have to leave them behind when you head away. We can help with the cost of vet fees abroad, as well as providing up to £1,500 to cover emergency expenses (maximum 60 days of cover per trip). Overseas Travel can be a useful option if you are planning to take your pet on holiday with you, providing your pet complies with the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS). This allows you to travel with your pet to anywhere in Europe (including Channel Islands consisting of the Bailiwick of Jersey and the Bailiwick of Guernsey Isle of Man and the Republic of Ireland).

Your questions answered

  • Pre-existing conditions

Do you cover pre-existing medical conditions?

Pre-existing conditions are usually identified by a vet in your cat or dog and can refer to both illnesses and injuries. Unfortunately, we can’t cover pre-existing illnesses or conditions that your pet suffers from. If you’d like more information on what is meant by ‘pre-existing conditions’ and our policy, then you can read more here.

  • Changing your pet insurance

Can I switch my pet insurance?

At petGuard, it’s easy to switch your pet insurance to us. If you’re not happy with your current pet insurance, then you can get a quote with us when your current cover is due for renewal. We’re even offering 20% off your first year of cover for new petGuard customers! If you’ve never claimed on your pet insurance for vet treatment, then switching your cover to us shouldn’t be a problem. If your cat or dog has needed vet treatment for a medical condition or injury, then that pre-existing condition will not be covered when you switch to petGuard insurance.

  • Age limits on pet insurance

Can I still get insurance for an older dog?

There is no upper age limit on our pet insurance. With our cover, you can apply for insurance for a senior cat or dog no matter their age.

  • Working dog insurance

Can I get cover for a working dog?

Yes! We are able to cover working dogs. Our insurance includes dogs that are used for shooting, hunting or working with livestock. We also cover dogs whose job it is to assist you or somebody else, e.g. a therapy dog.

  • Cat and dog breeders

    Do you cover breeders?

We do not cover breeders or anyone who uses their pet for commercial breeding or monetary gain. We will not pay claims for any pet being used for breeding purposes and dogs used for guarding, racing, personal protection or search and rescue purposes.
