Pre-Existing Conditions

More information on what is meant by a pre-existing condition

Does your pet have a pre-existing medical condition?

What is meant by 'pre-existing medical conditions?'

Pre-existing conditions are usually identified by a vet in your cat or dog. We can insure your pets from 8 weeks of age, and it may be that such conditions have been present even before then. Pre-existing conditions can refer to both illnesses or injuries and can happen again, or even re-appear in a different part of your pets' body further down the line.

Will my insurance cover pre-existing medical conditions?

Unfortunately, we can't cover pre-existing illnesses or conditions that your pet suffers from. This means that as part of your insurance, we will not be able to contribute to any vet fees that have accumulated as a result of an illness that you're aware of prior to the start of your cover, or within the first 14 days of your cover.

If your vet has identified a condition in your cat or dog that you then leave untreated, this will mean that your pet has a pre-existing medical condition.

Why are pre-existing conditions not covered on pet insurance?

Pre-existing conditions aren't usually covered on pet insurance policies. With our insurance, we aren't able to include pre-existing conditions, as in order to cover them, it would require us to charge much higher premiums to all of our customers. We want to make our insurance both affordable and fair for pet owners, so that's why we'll do what we can to avoid raising our premiums.

How soon can I claim on my pet insurance for vet fees?

Once you've taken out insurance with us, we can contribute towards your pet's vet fees after the first 14 days of your cover starting. After then, we can provide up to £12,000 in annual vet fees to cover treatment for your pet – providing it doesn't relate to pre-existing conditions. As a policy holder, you'll benefit from three levels of vet fees cover, which also includes 25% towards complementary treatments that have been prescribed by your vet.

In the event of a successful claim, payment can be made either:

  • Directly into your bank account, or;
  • To your vet, if you'd prefer.
